How to pay for a software project in monthly instalments

How an instalment plan works

  1. The project is scoped and quoted as a single fee.
  2. You agree a payment schedule, typically equal monthly payments across the delivery period.
  3. The work is delivered in increments, with progress you can see each week.
  4. The final payment usually falls around launch and handover.

Instalments vs a subscription

A subscription buys ongoing capacity for as long as it runs, and its total depends on how long you keep it. An instalment plan pays for one defined project over time: you know the total from the start, and the payments end when the project does.

Instalments vs borrowing

An instalment plan agreed with the studio building your software is not a loan. There is normally no third-party lender involved, and the schedule is simply part of the project agreement. Check one thing before you agree: whether the total is the same as paying in full, or whether a charge is added for spreading it.

When monthly payments make sense

  • You want to keep cash available for hiring, marketing or stock.
  • The project is large compared with your monthly budget.
  • You would rather pay as you see progress than all at the start.
  • Predictable monthly costs make your accounts easier to manage.

When paying in full is better

  • The budget is already set aside, and you would rather have a single invoice.
  • It is a small project with a short timeline.
  • Your organisation's purchasing process prefers one payment.

What to agree before you start

  • The total fee, and whether it is the same if you pay monthly.
  • The number of payments, and their dates.
  • How changes to the scope adjust the fee and the remaining payments.
  • What is excluded, such as hosting and third-party licences.
  • Who owns the code, designs and accounts. It should be you, from day one.

That is how JavaNrd's pricing works: one fee agreed in writing, paid in full or split into monthly payments, and everything we build belongs to you. If you are still working out what to build, start with how to scope a software project.

Common questions

Does paying for software in monthly instalments cost more?

Whether paying in monthly instalments costs more depends on the provider, so ask before you agree. At JavaNrd it does not: it is the same fee, just split into monthly payments.

What happens to the payments if the project scope changes?

A good agreement says how changes are handled: the new scope is quoted, and the fee and the remaining payments are adjusted in writing before any extra work starts.
